The Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) Bureau seeks a highly seasoned hydrologic process modeling software developer with advanced technical skills to provide the highest level of technical leadership and direction for the vision, development, and maintenance of the SFWMD enterprise simulation model, the Regional Simulation Model (RSM). The RSM is the primary regional planning model utilized in Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) and is continually being enhanced to meet the expanding complexity and functional needs of simulating the South Florida Water Management System.

The applicant must be highly capable of object-oriented software development with demonstrated scientific and engineering experience in hydrologic processes related to surface water / groundwater modeling and / or modeling of hydrodynamics and water quality. The applicant will need to possess effective interpersonal skills, which are necessary to work as part of the H&H Modeling interdisciplinary team. It is desired for the applicant to have a working knowledge and experience with regional scale hydrologic modeling, and water management and flood control operations in south Florida.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conceptualize, optimize algorithms and deliver clean efficient code to meet agency needs based using C++.
  • Use software development life cycle methodologies to design, build and test hydrologic simulation modeling applications
  • Work with engineers, scientist, and other developers to coalesce technical solutions.
  • Integrate existing software components cleanly with new code, verify and deploy applications to the modeling production environment
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade existing hydrologic simulation modeling, pre and post processing codes as needed
  • Serve on the RSM change control board.
  • Lead and facilitate regular RSM team meetings to convey status, technical solutions and vision.
  • Create technical documentation for reference, reporting, and technical reviews.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new software languages, software library packages, and related technologies to maintain RSM application sustainability and compatibility.
  • Ability to employ computational parallelization approaches and HPC workflows.
  • Provide advanced version control skillset with Git / GitHub repository systems.

Employment Guidelines:

Typically has Advanced Degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering, computer science or mathematics and 11+ years of experience that demonstrates measurable career progression related to hydrologic process modeling software development.

The candidate must have proven experience as a software developer or software engineer with knowledge of C++, Python, object-oriented software design, communication skills, and troubleshooting aptitudes.

This position may also be filled as at the Engineer Chief level, as well. For consideration at the Engineer Chief level, the candidate is required to possess a P.E. license.

License:

Valid State of Florida Driver’s License required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

The District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, requires this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
