Established in 1948, the World Health Organization serves as the directing and coordinating authority for public health within the United Nations system. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) is one of 6 Regional Offices globally that serves 22 Member States (including the occupied Palestinian territories). WHO seeks to promote health, ensure everyone can attain the highest level of health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable through partnerships, people and countries.
The Women’s Health Unit plays a critical role in promoting women’s health and well-being through advocacy, awareness, and capacity-building activities in the EMR. To achieve its goals, the unit requires a dedicated UNV technical officer to prepare background documents, support organizing technical/commemorative meetings and events, and support the rollout of initiatives aimed at improving women’s health across the region.
Prepare background documents and provide support for commemorating/organizing planned events, including – but not limited to:
- Regional Meeting for Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere (EWENE);
- World Health Day;
- International Women’s Day;
- World Humanitarian Day;
- Support the rollout of – amongst other potential initiatives:
- Regional Women’s Cancers Initiative;
- Women’s Mental Health Regional collaborative;
- Support other women’s health programme initiatives as needed.
Skills and experience:
- at Maternal and child health, or gender-related health aspects or other relevant programmes; experience with public health program design, implementation and evaluation is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
- • Comprehensive knowledge of maternal health, gender-related health aspects, health equity, monitoring and evaluation, cultural and ethical considerations in women’s health programs.
- • Excellent oral presentation and writing skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
- • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
- • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
- • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
- • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, among others), email, and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
