Technical Specialist

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Director of the BCIT Service Desk, the Technical Specialist provides technical hardware and software support for the computers, printers, and related devices (e.g., smartphones) maintained by BCIT; supports and advises Barnard College faculty and staff in their use of technology for their work; and serves as a technical resource on BCIT-led projects.

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1 st and 2 nd tier support on the BCIT Service Desk, including:
    – installation, configuration, backup, and general support for faculty and staff computers
    – analysis and triage of application issues
    – referral or escalation of complex issues to the correct resolver group
  • Assist in maintenance of campus computer labs, including the student labs in the dormitories, Milstein Center, and Diana Center.
  • Provide consultation to departmental computer labs.
  • Produce, update, and document software images as required for computers under BCIT administration.
  • Contribute to the various BCIT knowledge bases and support documentation.
  • Investigate new technologies and solutions, keeping on top of current events in the computing world, and making recommendations for changes that would serve the College.
  • Work on departmental and college-wide projects as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact positively and appropriately with a wide variety of users.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in desktop support
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems in current versions of Windows and macOS: operating systems, hardware, peripherals, and networking.
  • Thorough knowledge of the common user software environment (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, web browsers, email issues, etc.)
  • Familiarity with support-specific applications and systems (imaging suites, software desktop deployment systems, remote assistance applications, incident tracking systems, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Higher Education
  • Familiarity with the ITIL framework and ITSM principles
  • A+ Certification or equivalent
  • Active Directory managed environment support experience
  • Deeper knowledge of the principles of network services (DHCP, DNS, IMAP & SMTP, etc.)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift items weighing as much as 25 lbs
  • Ability to bend, stretch, and crouch for prolonged periods

Salary Range: $62,500-$67,500
