DESA’s mission – to promote development for all – reflects a fundamental concern for equity and equality in countries large and small, developed and developing. Within the framework of the United Nations Development Agenda, DESA works on issues ranging from poverty reduction, population, gender equality and indigenous rights to macroeconomic policy, development finance, public sector innovation, forest policy, climate change and sustainable development. The Department also supports the effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. At the United Nations, DESA provides the substantive support to intergovernmental processes on development issues in the General Assembly and in the Economic and Social Council, its functional commissions, and expert bodies. DESA engages with a variety of stakeholders around the world, including non-governmental organizations, civil society, the private sector, research and academic organizations and intergovernmental organizations, as well as our partner organizations in the United Nations system.Context:The Standards of Excellence for Public Administration Education and Training are a set of criteria or benchmarks that define the highest level of quality and performance in education and training programs related to public administration. These standards serve as a guide for academic and training institutions, as well as faculty, trainers, and practitioners, who aim to promote quality education and achieve exceptional outcomes. The Standards of Excellence were drafted and finalized in 2008 almost 15 years ago.The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), through its Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) and its Project Office on Governance (UNPOG), and the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA) established in 2023 a Task Force to review and/or update the Standards of Excellence. The review of the 2008 Standards was conducted through a global and regional consultative process. It took place between 2023 and 2024. Over 1,000 contributions were received by schools and institutes of public administration, networks, academia, and representatives of international, regional, and national organizations through an online survey and by attending the various meetings scheduled throughout the year.The Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DPIDG/UN DESA) is currently finalizing the 2025 Standards of Excellence for Public Administration Education and Training to be published and disseminated globally. This involves translating the original English report to 6 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. The online volunteer would be directly involved in reviewing the translation of the report to ensure accuracy.
Credit will be given to the online volunteer in the ‘Acknowledgements’ section of the report, which will be published on the UN DESA website.Task type:Translation and InterpretationTask description:The online volunteer will be tasked with the following:
1. Review the AI-translated Chinese 30-page report on the Standards of Excellence for Public Administration Education and Training.
2. Edit the report to reflect the original English version.Note: The task is to review the report for accuracy of the translation to ensure there are no major errors. The task is expected to take no more than 5 hours total.Requirements:Fluency in English and Chinese required. Previous experience working on translation/interpretation preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office suite preferred. Familiarity with UN system preferred.Work Hours: 1 – 5 hours per week
