Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The Flagship Initiative on Women’s Employment in the Green, STEM, and Care Economies seeks to increase women’s employment in the Arab States region by 5% by 2030 through innovative and collaborative approaches across governments, international financial institutions, the private sector, UN agencies, NGOs, and media. The Communications Specialist will play a critical role in supporting the initiative’s visibility, outreach, and advocacy efforts by producing high-quality content and supporting the implementation of communication strategies.
The consultant will have dual reporting lines to the Director of Women Employment in the Green, STEM and Care Economy, and the Regional Communication Specialist. Day-to-day management and supervision will be handled by the Regional Communication Specialist, while the Director of Women Employment in the Green, STEM, and Care Economy will provide strategic oversight.
Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work
Content Development:
- Developing high-quality, audience-centric content for various platforms, including social media content, web articles, press material, opinion pieces, and multimedia products (e.g., videos, interviews, reels, graphics, infographics);
- Creating compelling, innovative multimedia content tailored to different audiences, ensuring alignment with the initiative’s objectives and UN Women’s communication guidelines;
- Coordinating with graphic designers, videographers, and other vendors to produce communication materials.
Media and Outreach:
- Drafting and disseminating press releases, media advisories, and opinion pieces to enhance media coverage of the Flagship initiative;
- Development of social media campaigns to promote the initiative and its achievements.
Event Coverage:
- Providing communication and visibility support for flagship initiative events, including live coverage and post-event reporting;
- Documenting events through photography, video, and interviews to generate content for web and social media platforms;
- Development of event-related materials, such as brochures, banners, and event programs.
Collaboration and Coordination:
- Collaborate with UN Women’s country offices to ensure alignment of country level communication activities related to the flagship with regionoal strategies and guidelines;
- Ensuring all content adheres to UN Women’s branding and editorial standards;
- Providing communication and advocacy support to other tasks as required.

Functional Competencies:
- Proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies;
- Strong writing and editing skills for diverse formats and platforms;
- Proficiency in creating multimedia content and working with graphic and video production tools;
- Knowledge of social media analytics and digital marketing tools;
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities;

Required Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field is required.;
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- At least 5 years of professional work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications, including in media relations or any other related experience is required;
- Proven track record in creating and disseminating content for diverse audiences is required;
- Experience in event coverage and working with media outlets is required;
- Excellent analytical skills with strong drive for results and capacity to work independently are desirable.
Languages:
- Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
