Full Title: Undergraduate Sandwich Intern: Undergraduate Sandwich Intern: Improving spatial planning of African dry biomesThe main goal of this project is to generate input data to improve spatial planning of African dry biomes with regards to biodiversity, ecosystem services and restoration. African dry biomes provide key ecosystem services to African populations such as food and water provision but are currently under human pressures of habitat transformation and climate change. (PDF, 64.9kb)More detailsThe student will join the Spatial Analysis team where African dry biomes are studied at different scales. They will primarily use spatial analysis (e.g. species distribution modelling, google earth engine) to participate in three projects: (1) Diversity and distribution of African grasslands, (2) What should be grown where? And (3) Forest ecology, fires and regeneration of the dry forests of Madagascar.The applicant should be studying a discipline like biosciences, bioinformatics, ecology, or geography. They must have a demonstrated interest in biodiversity, its sustainable use and conservation; experience in data handling and in data analysis (desirable if the student has experience with a programming language e.g. R); and experience of report writing.This role is based at Kew with the option of regular home working, subject to operational requirements.The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew) is a leading plant science institute, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and major visitor attraction.
