This is a special measure employment equity initiative and candidates from this group who wish to qualify for preferential consideration must self-identify.Job DescriptionUnder the general supervision of the fleet maintenance officer, directs work load, monitors productivity, and prioritizes work needed to meet operational requirements. Inspects vehicles’ road worthiness, analyses and recommends the course of repair required, verifies the adequacy of completed repair work and certifies vehicles as road worthy. Performs minor and major repairs to a wide variety of postal vehicles and equipment, and repairs or overhauls components parts. Verifies work done by contractors, and certifies that repairs that have been performed are safe, road worthy, reliable and within specifications dictated by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), provincial or Canada Post fleet management. Supports day to day security measures to protect mail, vehicles, buildings and corporate assets.Job ResponsibilitiesBelow are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Lead Hand, Vehicle Mechanic.1. Inspects vehicles within Canada Post fleet and completes the necessary documentation according to Canada Post and/or Government established frequency of inspections (Municipal, Provincial, and Federal).2. Completes quality control inspections by examining and testing repaired vehicles to ensure repairs have been satisfactorily completed, according to Provincial and Canada Post specifications, and certifying road worthiness before releasing back to Operations.3. Performs in-shop or on-road minor or major repairs on all types of postal fleet vehicles as directed by the maintenance Supervisor within original equipment manufacturer (O.E.M.) and Canada Post specifications.4. Maintains the condition of hand tools and shop equipment to a safe reliable standard.5. Escalates any problems to the next higher level by completing the appropriate reports. Evaluates, assists and provides written report to the fleet management staff on new trials and modifications approved by Fleet Management.6. Provides input and support as required to driver training programs and Fleet Management on special operating requirements of new vehicles and driver habits.7. Adheres to all Health and Safety and Environment policies and procedures, by keeping the work area clean and free of hazards in support of a healthy work place.Job Responsibilities (continued)8. Replaces or overhauls defective parts with new components using mechanics hand tools, power tools and related automotive shop equipment.9. Performs other related duties as required.10. The Lead Hand has the additional responsibility of scheduling and supervising the work flow through the vehicle service depot and contractors with particular attention to quality of work, timeliness, cost effectiveness, operational effectiveness and recording of vehicle/repair information to the different fleet management systems.11. In the absence of a stores person, ensures parts are ordered properly and inventoried to stock room or work order within local and national purchasing agreements.12. Reports verbally or in writing to fleet management any issues that would impede fleet operations from delivering the mail as related to fleet vehicles or support provided by fleet management.13. In the absence of the fleet management supervisor, the Lead Hand is the first line contact person.14. Move vehicles if required.QualificationsEducation
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent (as per provincial requirements).
- Graduate of technical/apprenticeship program for Automotive Service Technician (light vehicles under 4,500kg) OR Truck and Coach Technician (heavy equipment / vehicles over 4,500kg) accrediting qualification in one of these classes of vehicles.
- Must hold appropriate valid certification for the maintenance and repair of light OR heavy vehicles recognized in the province of employment.
Experience
- Must be currently in the trade.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a physically demanding environment.

- Valid provincial driver license, with driver abstract which meets current corporate requirements.
- Appropriate license to operate heavy vehicles, if required in the province of employment.

- Through knowledge of motor vehicle mechanics, heavy truck mechanics, diagnostic techniques, industry trends & regulations and fleet preventive maintenance programs.
Abilities:
- Ability to diagnose problems and make recommendation(s) for efficient repair.
- Competent in use of automotive repair tools and equipment.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Basic computer skills and aptitude.
- Provide quality control inspection of outside repairs.
- Licensed to operate medium duty truck (5 ton) with air brakes.
- Ability to plan organize and control the work load of a group of mechanics.
