Since the Program’s inception, the Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP) has been a leader in the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students, representing Abenaki, Blackfoot, Cree, Dene, Delaware, Inuit, Iroquois, Metis, Mi’kmaq, Mohawk, the Ojibwe communities in Health Sciences in Canada.In order to increase the number of physicians trained in Alberta, particularly in the rural areas, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD), University of Alberta is partnering with Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP), based in Grande Prairie to develop the Northern Alberta Medical Program, which is a regional distributed campus for the U of A Medical School.The Northern Alberta Medical Program (NAMP), offers learners the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience across diverse northern Alberta communities, emphasizing rural and regional healthcare.Position SummaryReporting to the Executive Director, WIHP, this position leads the day-to-day operations of the Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP) within the Northern Alberta Medical Program (NAMP) in Grande Prairie, and assists with implementing and evaluating its strategic plan. The position works closely with WIHP and NAMP stakeholders and staff, including the Regional Academic Lead NAMP, and Northwestern Polytechnic Dean of Students, Education Coordinator(s), the Community Engagement & Recruitment Coordinator, Clinician Lead(s), Elders and Knowledge Keepers, administrators, and other key partners to help advance WIHP’s strategic goals. The role primarily focuses on advancing Indigenous student success, fostering community engagement, and integrating Indigenous perspectives within healthcare education and practice. This position recruits and retains Indigenous medical students and supports and strengthens the development of intentional and meaningful partnerships with First Nation and Métis communities, clinical faculty, and clinical sites for Indigenous medical education opportunities. It also includes opportunities for collaboration with Northern Western Polytechnic (NWP). NWP may be engaged to support specific initiatives, particularly where shared resources and expertise can enhance program outcomes.The position ensures collaboration across teams to foster culturally safe learning environments, build meaningful community connections, and promote the representation and leadership of Indigenous Peoples in healthcare. By working across diverse stakeholder groups, the role seeks to achieve meaningful and responsive outcomes aligned with WIHP’s strategic plan.This role will uphold the principles outlined in the University of Alberta Memoranda of Relational Understanding (MoRU) with Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta and Métis Nation of Alberta, ensuring all actions and initiatives respect the collaborative framework established. The position will emphasize the reciprocal relationships needed to advance the shared goals of increasing Indigenous representation in healthcare professions and integrating traditional knowledge into health education and practice.This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, balancing in-person responsibilities at the NAMP Campus in Grande Prairie with the flexibility of remote work options.Job RequirementsDutiesAssist the Executive Director, WIHP, in achieving strategic goals at the Northern Alberta Medical Program campus and Northern Alberta First Nation and Métis communities

  • Works collaboratively with the Executive Director to develop short-term and long-term work plans to advance the strategic priorities identified under the Strategic Plan.
  • Understands the scope, objectives, and deliverables and creates processes, procedures, or tools to support the Program.
  • Develops sub-strategies and proposals regarding budget allocations/reallocations and distribution of resources to support these identified priorities.
  • May serve on committees within the FoMD as that support or advance the Program’s strategic goals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Indigenous medical education, health systems, as well as programming that supports the improvement of Indigenous health, including the integration of Indigenous traditional medicine.

Planning, Administration, and Coordination

  • Coordinates and liaises with Indigenous cultural supports (i.e., Elders, knowledge keepers, community service providers) to ensure students’ unique perspectives and identified needs are supported and strengthened.
  • Assists the Indigenous Community Engagement and Recruitment Coordinator in developing, planning, and coordinating a comprehensive Indigenous outreach/recruitment program. that is based on the shared goals of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis partners and the faculty.

Communications

  • Provides information about the Indigenous Health Program to prospective Indigenous students, community partners, and others interested in a health profession.
  • Develops the Indigenous student support and services engagement plan as the foundation for communication/orientation to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs.
  • Liaises with distinctions-based Indigenous communities regarding special events, supports and services, and other important dates relevant to the Indigenous education system.

Reporting

  • Submits key performance data that supports information-sharing activities among community partners, faculty executive leadership, and strategic decision-making.
  • Presents specified key performance (including data analytics on program growth) indicators to prepare the outreach/engagement program budget for incorporation into the budget.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in business, education, or health sciences.
  • Must have knowledge of distinctions-based community and Indigenous Governance structures.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in community development and implementing community-based programs.
  • Full understanding of TRC Calls to Action (particularly 18-24, which pertain to health, including an emphasis on preserving Indigenous languages and cultural practices), Principles of OCAP®, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Tri-Council Policy Statement, Chapter 9.
  • Demonstrated involvement with and alongside Indigenous communities and a strong understanding of community development principles, Indigenous methodologies and research approaches, and Northern Indigenous cultural protocol.
  • Strong project coordination, reporting, and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Project Management experience or training.
  • Experience or training with Finances.
  • Experience with research/research projects.
  • Ability to understand multiple perspectives and respond to diverse needs.
  • Team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong competency using Google Suite and Microsoft Office and ability to learn new applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to those with an Indigenous heritage.
  • Preference will be given to those with a graduate-level degree, or a bachelor’s degree, with experience in Indigenous health research, community-led research, or clinical research.
  • Flexibility in available hours to accommodate varying schedules, meetings, and long-stay work in communities as required (up to 4 weeks at a time).
  • Formalized training, such as post-secondary training in Project Management.
