  • Interfacing with onsite and offsite waste generators, providing guidance and support) to ensure suitable packaging, labelling, transportation and storage of clean, mixed and hazardous waste streams.
  • Working with offsite waste processors to ensure material is being sent as per WAG’s (waste acceptance guidelines).
  • Inspecting and sampling undetermined waste to ensure appropriate packaging, labelling, storage, and disposition of hazardous and mixed waste streams.
  • Supporting the operation of analytical equipment used to verify the absence of radiological contamination and to interpret and document the analysis results.
  • Being a team member supporting Clearable Waste and Hazardous/Mixed Waste Operations data review and documentation.
  • Assessing complex data, reviewing and approving waste data sheets for incoming and outgoing waste streams.
  • Providing technical expertise and oversight throughout all stages of Clean and Hazardous/Mixed waste operations, including handling, transportation, storage, and disposal.
  • Carrying out waste management activities, including Qualifying for Shipment (on- and off-site waste), scheduling waste shipments.
  • Ensuring hard-copy records associated with waste shipments are filed.
  • Conducting routine safety inspections of waste storage areas.
  • Preparing Work Control Documents such as WCAF (Work Control Authorization Form) and associated IWC (Integrated Work Control) documentation.
  • Preparing Order To Operate and LOTO (lock out tag out) procedures.
  • Preparing weekly work schedules.
  • Supporting projects and providing direction for waste disposition to ensure packaging and labelling support safe handling, transport and storage in the licensed Facility.
  • Documenting surveillance results and preparation of final reports.
  • Preparing work plans, statements of work, bills of lading and operational procedures.
  • Supporting Sort and Seg operations with sample collection, analysis and documentation updates.
  • Contributing to the development and execution of Clearable Waste Operations, Mixed (radiological) and Hazardous Waste Management objectives.
  • Provides input to the team to make sound operational decisions and respond to upset conditions by making conservative decisions regarding safety.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position and has six (6) to eight (8) years of pertinent technological experience. Diploma in chemistry or instrumentation preferred. OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and ten to twelve (10-12) years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
  • Hands-on experience with the practical aspects of safe material handling, including hazardous and mixed(radioactive) waste handling, storage, and disposal processes, or working in a licensed nuclear facility, is an asset.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing nuclear waste management (e.g., CNSC).
  • Experience in data entry and documentation tasks.
  • Experience and proficiency in technical writing.
  • Experience with safe handling of hazardous and mixed waste.
  • Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams across all levels to achieve project objectives and ensure compliance with operational goals.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario general driver’s license.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to operate complex analysis equipment and interpret results against pre-determined parameters.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Advanced technical writing skills and proven ability in document review and development.
  • Effective communication skills across diverse teams, and present technical information clearly, with the ability to collaborate professionally with internal and external customers and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong analytical abilities to assess complex data, reviewing and approving waste data sheets for incoming and outgoing waste streams.
  • Knowledge of waste management practices.
  • Knowledge of Clean and Hazardous/Mixed Waste Operations.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel Software.
  • Working Knowledge of Integrated Work Control documentation and standards.
  • Advance WHMIS training.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Desk with personal computers/workstations and in-field activities (conducted throughout the year in all weather conditions), including daily hazardous waste pick-ups and oversight.
  • Material handling, packaging and lifting in various environments, sometimes for extended periods.
  • Required to use full personal protection equipment including a respirator.
  • Driving of CNL vehicles within the boundaries of the site.
  • Required to become a Facility Emergency Steward and a member of the CRL WMAs Emergency Response staff, who may not be evacuated under the CRL Site-Wide Evacuation Procedure.
  • Work schedule is four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a 40 hour work week.
