Job description

In our continued drive to provide outstanding professional consulting services and original solutions to a wide range of natural resource problems, we are looking for an energetic and experienced Project Manager and Wildlife Biologist to expand and complement our team.

Job Description:
Primary duties may include:
The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and managing wildlife studies, preparing environmental evaluations or assessments, and developing mitigation for development projects throughout Canada.
- Design and propose biological field and desktop studies to meet scientific and regulatory objectives;
- Prepare proposals, reports, and/or study plans;
- Manage and direct environmental technical aspects of multiple small to large-scale planning projects and teams;
- Manage and direct post-construction monitoring for renewable projects, including project-specific mitigation;
- Analyze potential project impacts and prepare environmental evaluations and assessments to avoid, minimize, or mitigate those impacts;
- Conduct day-to-day administration and management of projects;
- Complete and direct various project management and support tasks related to regulatory, permitting, and wildlife requirements;
- Conduct site visits and fieldwork, as necessary;
- Field data review;
- Coordinate with local/provincial/federal agencies, First Nations, and the public in support of client-directed project work;
- Foster current business relationships and actively promote new business development efforts;
- Capitalize on existing client relationships to expand WEST’s profile;
- Work individually, and with a team of natural resource specialists, scientists, and biometricians;
- Promote WEST’s core values of quality client service and a collaborative team approach while maintaining a positive and respectful work atmosphere;
- Weekly timesheet and expense report completion;
- Support reporting as needed: compiling tables and figures, report writing; and
This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all the duties that may be associated with this position.
The following general requirements of the position must be met by all candidates:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in biology, environmental science/planning, natural resource science, ecology, or related field;
- Professional Biologist (P. Biol.) status with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB), and/or Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) status with the College of Applied Biology;
- Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience, including wildlife biology and environmental consulting, in various sectors;
- Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in Project Management;
- Experience managing renewable energy projects;
- Experience with federal, provincial, and municipal environmental permitting, and regulatory requirements;
- Experience and/or aptitude for completing business development;
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills;
- Strong writing skills, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and accurately report scientific methods and results of field studies;
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent time management and project management skills, with the ability to consistently and reliably work well under time constraints, budgets, and meet deliverable targets and deadlines with little oversight;
- Ability to follow protocols and instructions from managers and accept guidance and constructive assessment;
- Possession of a valid driver’s licence with no restrictions;
- Able to rent a vehicle from a rental agency (e.g., Enterprise);
- Able to obtain a driver’s abstract that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company;
- Able to pass a drug and alcohol test that meets the minimum criteria of WEST and our clients;
- High level of initiative and ability to think critically to solve challenging problems;
- Capable of adhering to all health and safety requirements, outlined by WEST and our clients, for the duration of their employment; and
- Have durable steel-toed boots and hiking boots with a minimum 6-inch ankle (waterproof highly recommended), and good quality binoculars (8×42 or 10×42). These pieces of field equipment will not be reimbursed by WEST.
Desired Skills:
- Experience managing PCM projects in Alberta;
- Experience managing environmental technical aspects of oil and gas projects;
- Ability to identify
75% of bird species in western Canada by sound and
90% by sight; * Extensive experience completing pre-construction wildlife surveys;
- Experience in bat acoustic detector setup, programing, and analysis;
- Experience using tablet data collection systems; and
- Experience leading field crews.
